Stephanie Lazarus

It wasn't just any cop. Stephanie Lazarus was a well respected, highly decorated female detective with the Los Angeles Police Department. And it wasn't just a minor crime. She was charged with the murder of Sherri Rasmussen, a young nurse, 23 years after the killing.

"A Los Angeles police officer arrested for murder is just - it's a bombshell! I mean, you just don't get those kinda cases!" says Andrew Blankstein. "People were really stunned by this."

Blankstein and Joel Rubin cover the police beat for the Los Angeles Times and are consultants to "48 Hours."

"Nobody saw this coming. Nobody says she was a cop that they saw on the edge," Rubin says. "As far as we can tell, people in the department saw her as, you know, a cop's cop, a good cop."

"She's been a longtime patrol detective," Blankstein adds. "She was with the art theft detail in commercial crimes… which is theft of high-end art in L.A .And in doing those kind of investigations… it gets a lot of press, a lot of attention… If the police and prosecutors are going to be believed, she's harboring a secret about murder for 23 years!"

At first glance, Stephanie Lazarus has no obvious connection to the victim in this murder case - Sherri Rasmussen, a highly regarded nursing administrator.

Sherri came from a very close-knit family. Her parents, Nels and Loretta Rasmussen, adored their three daughters and their growing family.

"…Sherri was the glue that held the family together all the time…..and made everything that much better," says Sherri's younger sister, Teresa, tells "48 Hours Mystery" correspondent Maureen Maher.

But in February 1986, Sherri would be attacked, beaten and shot to death in her Los Angeles home.

"We were an ordinary family, you know... You never think something like this is gonna happen to you," says Teresa. She says she never could have anticipated that only just now - more than 20 years after her sister's murder - there's been arrest.

"It doesn’t make the pain any less," she says. "You start the grieving process all over again, one more time."

The pain is most obvious when the family visits Sherri's grave.

"I don't believe that you can understand the grief… a part of your life has just been taken away forever," Nels Rasmussen tells Maher in an exclusive interview.

Her parents say Sherri excelled at everything she did. She became a nurse when she was only 20. At age 27, she was named director of critical care nursing at Glendale Adventist Medical Center, where she sometimes lectured.

"She liked taking care of people and making sure things were done right, that people were cared for properly," says Loretta Rasmussen.

"She said, 'I'm gonna elevate the stature of nursing in the nation,'" Nels recalls. "And she was on her way."

On top of a successful career, in early 1986, Sherri was extraordinarily happy, having just married the man she loved. Her new husband was John Ruetten, a young engineer she'd met in 1984.

As it would turn out, John was the single link to the woman accused of murdering his new bride.

That is because Stephanie Lazarus was Ruetten's ex-girlfriend. And according to Sherri's friends and family, Stephanie was not willing to give up the man she'd first met in college several years before the murder.

"Sherri was competition," Teresa says. "If she could get Sherri outta the way, then possibly John would be free to be with her again."

John is the one who discovered his wife's body.

"He was in a daze," Teresa explains. "He was sort of the deer in the headlights look, you know?"

John Ruetten has had little to say publicly since his wife's murder in 1986.

He briefly addressed mourners at a hospital memorial service for Sherri, telling them, "I just want to thank you all for coming and I want you to know that Sherri was the best professional in the world - she was the best wife that anybody could ever have."

"To me, he's kind of a central character that we really know the least about," says Blankstein.

"There's a lot of questions left unanswered," adds Rubin.

Questions like: what did John Ruetten know? Or suspect? He says that early on, he told detectives to talk to his ex-girlfriend - an L.A.P.D. cop.

"John is really the only person that has this connection to both women that can tell us what was going on to some extent?" Maher asks Rubin. "You would think, yeah," he replies.

But police were off chasing other leads, and Sherri's friend, Jayne Goldberg, says that Ruetten just quietly faded out of sight, leaving her quite angry.

"I would have expected that John would have been much more involved in the investigation… and demand answers," she says.

Especially, as months - and then years - went by with no resolution to the case.

"He should have been her advocate. She would have been his," Goldberg says. "Why wasn't he camped outside the police station? I don’t understand it!"

Gossip girl season 4

Gossip Girl finale & Season 4 premiere date news

The Gossip Girl season finale aired tonight on CW with some interesting developments occurring. Tonight's show was titled "Last Tango, Then Paris" based on a 1972 film "Last Tango in Paris". We saw major plot developments involving Dan, Nate, Jenny, Serena, Blair, Chuck Bass and the return of Georgina. We're also learning who will be back for Gossip Girl Season 4 and a bit about the season premiere date.

Among the major stories that unfolded on the episode, Serena and Nate's relationship explodes after a gossip girl leaked photo shows Dan in bed with Serena. Georgina also arrives back to reveal she may be pregnant with Dan's baby. Also, Dan finds out that Chuck had been sleeping with his sister Jenny. Chuck, who had been preparing to propose to Blair, gets punched by Dan right before he could pop the question. Later still in the episode, we see Chuck get mugged and his engagement ring he was planning to give Blair is stolen. Chuck puts up a fight and ends up getting shot by the assailant, leaving Chuck on the ground for the season ending cliffhanger! Fans are already trying to find out if Chuck Bass dies or lives!

So is Chuck dead or alive? Is Georgina pregnant with Dan's baby? Is there anyone who hasn't slept with everyone else on GG? Gossip Girl Season 4 will hold all the answers to the big questions left on tonight's show. Season 4 is scheduled to begin this coming fall and run into 2011. Reports already indicate that Taylor Momsen (Jenny) & Jessica Szohr (Vanessa) will both be absent for a number of episodes on the upcoming season. Georgina's character will be more prominent and have some sort of agenda this season. Other reports from Leighton Meester indicate that filming will be done in Paris, France for the 4th season. Definitely makes sense since Blair and Serena ran away to France on tonight's Gossip Girl season finale.

erin andrews Peephole Video Has a Virus

ESPN reporter Erin Andrews has been videotaped naked in her hotel room. The video is circulating the net and now it contains a virus.

Somehow the peephole video helped Erin Andrews to get into the spotlight. It gave her even more publicity, specially now that she’s one of the favorites in Dancing With The Stars 2010.

The video was taken by a man named Michael David Barrett. He shot the nude video through several different hotel room peepholes. Erin Andrews filed a case against him and he was sentenced on March 15, 2010 to 30 months in prison.

In court, Andrews said to Barrett, “You violated me and you violated all women. You are a sexual predator, a sexual deviant and they should lock you up.”

The Erin Andrews peephole video was a top internet search on the Google. Many people are searching for it and probably wants to watch it. But curious surfers should think twice before watching it, because it has a virus.

When you download and watch the video, your computer will have a malware. Virus makers are using the Erin Andrews peephole video as a trap to infect Apple Macs and Windows PCs with malware.

lakers vs suns live stream

Despite Game 1 loss, Suns will knock out Lakers in six

It's 3 p.m., Chick Hearn Media Room, reminder to call it like you see it, and so I have the Lakers losing to the Suns in six.

I haven't seen much of the Suns, but I have the Lakers.

Both Oklahoma City and Utah began the playoffs going four on five with the Lakers, and yet the Lakers still struggled at times against two teams starting stiffs at center.

It's true the Lakers swept Utah, but for the most part the games were close and the Lakers were playing a team with only two players in Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer.

» Don't miss a thing. Get breaking news alerts delivered to your inbox.

Everyone says the Lakers are going to win because of their size advantage, and if Andrew Bynum steps up and plays big like he often does in front of the Staples Center crowds, the Lakers probably do cruise into the NBA Finals.

But if he goes missing, as he has shown a tendency to do, what size advantage do the Lakers have?

There's also no underestimating the power of positive thinking. If the Lakers lose in six, I can still join a golf excursion planned for the Lake Tahoe area in early June.

IT'S 4:48 P.M., interview room in the Staples Center basement, and there's concern now if the Lakers lose to the Suns that Phil Jackson will call it quits as coach of the Lakers.

No way. Not my good buddy Phil. I might have to start pulling for the Lakers; I certainly don't want to break in a new coach when there's a chance we might be joining Phil and Jeanie and double dating.

Apparently Phil said something on a radio show last week, but since no one listens to the show, it just surfaced.

According to a transcript of what he said, when asked about the chances of retiring, Jackson said, "Well, I think pretty good."

He went on to add the same old stuff about gauging how he might feel going into another long season, but he also said, "You wonder, is there a time where you just feel like I've had enough, I just don't want to do it anymore?"

So what about it, are you leaning one way or the other?

"No," Jackson said with a grin. "I'm leaning on the podium and that's about it."

When I said, "You're being evasive," he replied, "Thank you."

Jackson has said all along he will wait until the season is over, undergo medical tests and get away before making a decision on his future. But was this a change in his thinking?

There's also no indication how much the Lakers might be willing to spend on a head coach next season, Jackson now getting $12 million and probably not at the stage in his Hall of Fame career where he's going to be looking to take a pay cut.

"You've said if you get to the Finals, you've done a good job and will see what happens next," I said.

"Yes, right," Jackson said.

"You said you'd lean toward leaving if you don't get to the Finals."

fat embolism

The term ‘fat embolism‘ was mentioned in the season finale of the popular TV series House. Because of this, people are searching for it and some are tweeting it.

“Yeah, she died from a fat embolism, riding in the ambulance after the amputation. It was unavoidable,” tweeted Saul Nutts. “I don’t even know what that is, but I gotta look it up now.”

“She mostly lived until the end of the episode. Had a fat embolism from the amputation. I can’t believe she would,” tweeted Maria.

Zenker first described fat embolism at autopsy in 1862. In 1873, von Bergmann clinically diagnosed fat embolism syndrome for the first time.

But what is fat embolism and what causes it?

Fat embolism syndrome (FES) occurs when embolic fat macroglobules pass into the small vessels of the lung and other sites, producing endothelial damage and resulting respiratory failure (ARDS-like picture), cerebral dysfunction and a petechial rash. It can be difficult to diagnose. Fat embolism is caused by fractures, Orthopaedic procedures, Massive soft tissue injury, Severe burns. Bone marrow biopsy and Nontraumatic settings.

Chuck Lorre

Chuck Lorre gets lucky-How and why?
It has been recently learnt that CBS is all set to treat the viewers with four new shows for its next season of Fall shows.

Producer Chuck Lorre has already got two shows-Big Bang Theory, Two and Half Men on the CBS network and now it seems that he has hit a jackpot with his Mike & Molly being selected by CBS.

The cast and crew are unwilling to divulge the whole story of Mike & Molly since it will destroy interest of the viewers in the show.

However, it has been learnt that the pilot episode will feature a couple who overeats.

The role of Mike is going to be played by comedic actor Billy Gardell. He will play the role of a police officer who unexpectedly meets his dream girl at an Overeaters Anonymous meeting.

It has also been learnt that Swoosie Kurtz will be present in the pilot episode and she will be playing the role of Joyce who is the mother of Molly.

Other shows which CBS has selected include a family cop show Blue Bloods, half-hour sitcom “Bleep My Dad Says” and a spinoff of a popular series known as Criminal Minds.

Hope that CBS is successful in entertaining the viewers with its new bouquet of interesting shows.

LeBron James Mom

LeBron James Mom, Delonte West and the 20 Craziest Rumors in Sports

There's a rumor floating around that the Cavaliers' downfall in the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Celtics was fueled by a pint-sized point guard getting into epic trouble with The King.

TerezOwens.com is alleging they have a source that knows that Delonte West was having an affair with LeBron James' mom and that King James found out about the tryst moments before Game 4 of the series.

There's just enough corroborating evidence to make this borderline plausible.

The Internet has certainly fueled these kind of wildfire whispers, but crazy rumors have been floating around sports long before the dot coms became the norm.

Rima Fakih Swimsuit: Miss USA

Last night was the Miss USA pageant and the new winner makes news in many ways. First of all, the Rima Fakih swimsuit score was said to be the lowest of all the contestants. This should show the opponents of the pageant that this girl has more than just a beautiful body. And she does indeed have a gorgeous body, but she has brains too.

Her interview question from the judges was in reference to birth control for contraception. Basically she was asked if she thought these pills should be covered by insurance. Her answer was quick, precise and she was able to answer without crossing into the area of women’s rights. She stuck to the question by indicating that she did indeed feel that the pills should be covered since it is a medication that requires a prescription.

One of the most difficult portions of the contest all together is probably this interview question and she was able to answer it without upsetting those who are against birth control in general. She also stumbled when she was heading onto the stage from the sheer volume of the train on her dress. She now has a chance to represent the USA in the Miss Universe pageant. She also receives a one-year lease in a New York apartment including paid utilities and an undisclosed salary.

The who, what, where, when,
why — and why not — of L.A. sports

William Wesley could be brokering a LeBron James-John Calipari deal
May 17, 2010 | 11:57 am
The Chicago Tribune reported Monday that, according to NBA sources, basketball power broker William Wesley -- a friend of both LeBron James and University of Kentucky Wildcats Coach John Calipari -- had been contacting NBA teams that had coaching vacancies and salary-cap space about the possibility of bringing in James and Calipari together.

Another league source told the Tribune that another person, described as an "unknown Calipari connection," contacted the Bulls over the weekend.

NBA teams cannot formally contact free agents until the league signing period starts at 9:01 p.m. PDT on June 30.

James and Calipari had become friends through their mutual friendship with Wesley, who was part of the family that James referred to in his comments after the Game 6 loss to Boston knocked James and the Cleveland Cavaliers out of the playoffs.

Calipari said on his Twitter feed that he would remain in Lexington to coach the Wildcats in 2010-11.

Now,enlightened people will produce a thousand pages and more underlying the definition of an orthocenter, its formation, values, characteristics and a lot more but this question didn’t rise from the academia but came to light from a reality game show, the ever popular ‘Who wants to be a millionaire’.

This question was asked to Cassie Belek, a University of Missouri graduate student from Overland Park, Kansas and the correct answer carries the said million for her. She has already stated that Math in general is not one of her strong suits.

If she’s a bit jittery about the answer she has other options too. If she chooses not to answer this last one, she will walk away with the assured $50,000 and even if she is incorrect with her answer, Belek still gets the $25,000 just for reaching that stage of the competition.

The factor that go to Belek’s favour are that she’s still left with a lifeline by which she can enlist answer from an expert.

But Belek is not pinning her hopes on the million but she is busy making her plans with the assured $25,000.According to her, as her student loans were piling up, this sudden windfall will sure provide some much needed respite from the drudgery of everyday financial worries.

This straight-from-the-heart sort of young lady comments on her winnings as, “It’s been a long time to wait, but I’m glad it’s finally airing. My loans are starting to run out, so I’m waiting for the check.”We wish her all the best with her future life.
